DirectSR: Streamlining Image Augmentation for Gamers and Developers

Image augmentation technologies are currently one of the most important graphics technologies of interest to gamers and companies alike. Why not, as it offers a wonderful combination of better performance without significantly losing graphical quality, or not losing it at all.

Like many of the graphics technologies that came before it, Microsoft included the new technologies within its graphics library in the form of a single standard, or a new technology called DirectSR. Microsoft clarified in a new publication that DirectSR is not a new image augmentation technology. Rather, it is an API for game developers that will provide a working environment for existing image optimization techniques such as:

(DLSS from nvidia, FSR from amd, XESS from intel) and futuristic seamlessly (it's a bit like the DXR standard with ray tracing acceleration).

DirectSR was developed with the help of NVIDIA and AMD, which are demonstrating the technology at GDC 2024 in March. Which means that these companies have reached common ground on what is actually required for temporal upscaling (the technique used to maximize the image) to work in games, and the DirectSR interface will standardize them, and perhaps add others in the future.

It is worth noting here that this is not the first attempt to do this, as NVIDIA has already tried to provide a framework through which game developers can provide competing technology. Unfortunately, it needed to be integrated with each title separately. So DirectSR technology may be the perfect solution to this matter, so let's see what this new standard will lead to.

DirectSR: Simplifying Upscaling for Everyone

Gamers rejoice! Microsoft's new DirectSR API aims to streamline game development and enhance your experience by uniting the super resolution technologies of NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel.

What's the big deal?

One code for all: Developers can now support various super resolution options (DLSS, FSR, XeSS) with a single code block, saving time and effort.

Smoother visuals: DirectSR promises a more efficient and seamless experience for gamers, potentially boosting performance and image quality.

Benefits beyond developers:

Wider compatibility: DirectSR potentially opens doors for future games to support multiple upscaling solutions, regardless of your graphics card brand.

Simplified future: This API could pave the way for easier integration of new upscaling technologies in future games.

Important to note:

DirectSR won't be a separate application for you to use directly.

More details about its impact on gameplay will be revealed at the upcoming Game Developers Conference (GDC 2024).
